When you strap a filter to the intake of a box fan, it reduces the airflow a lot. That being said, you can make up for this by moving the fan closer to your work, and possibly having multiples. At $20/per fan and $5-10/filter, IMHO, if you have the space and don't mind the moving around, they're a GREAT way to keep dust localized.
The dust ports on most of those machines are NOT very effective and you may need a combination of the shop vac and larger dust collector. Even then, it's not a given that you will get all the dust and the overhead air filter is needed. Planing and jointing make larger chips and usually a large dust collector is fine for those operations.
Start by containing the dust within your workshop, Lester. That means walling off the shop and installing a ceiling. Where air exits the shop, mount a furnace filter over the return air vent to trap dust in the outgoing air.
My dust collection system is in a closet that adjoins the shop. My thought was it would cut down on the noise of the system. I discovered, very quickly, I had to provide a return …

ATM (Active Thermal Management) is a company that makes dedicated kits with (fairly) silent fans triggered by thermal probes. Another route to consider: dust is the enemy of electronics in that it inhibits heat dissipation. If you were to get a new amp that doesn't generate much heat, the likelihood of dust being a problem is greatly reduced.
Typically have the shop bay door open, put this at the back and blow towards the bay door at about a 60 degree angle toward the ceiling. Keeps good air circulation throughout the shop and doesn't stir the dust too much. Also can be moved around the shop as needed. My opinion is that ceiling fans hang too low, and would get in the way.

The other two major dust offenders in the shop are the bandsaw and the miter saw. I started with the bandsaw. I made seven cuts through 3/4" thick material about 20" or so in length. For dust collection I have two flex hoses secured to the top and bottom of the table with nothing more than a couple bungee cords.
Just having a lot of dust around doesn't necessarily mean you have an explosion hazard. When that dust is airborne is when it becomes an explosion hazard. I work at a place that dries food grade powdered products. We don't treat any areas as hazardous location, but they are washed down every day when in operation which helps tremendously at ...
This exhaust fan can be a long-term investment as it's made of durable aluminum and steel alloy. Also, a strong shutter encloses the motor to keep it safe from dust and bugs, maintaining its functionality for extended periods. Best of all, it's permanently lubricated to deliver top-notch performance for several years.
Look at it this way... most people never clean the fans, heat sinks, etc. on their computers. They go for years sucking in all the dust in a house. If you make a point of cleaning yours, it's probably better off than most computers sitting in cleaner environments. I don't think you'll ever have a problem leaving it unprotected.

With an 850-1250 CFM strong vortex fan, this system has a high circulating air filtration rate. The HEPA high-performance carbon deodorization net dust filter can stop 99.5% of 0.3μm particles, ensuring efficient dust removal. Cons. The filter should be replaced approximately every four months, which could be a hassle for some users.

I built this dust collection system in my wood shop a while ago. I had always wanted a centralized system with separate lines running to all the machines. I would have …
When exhausting a finish room, DO NOT pull the air out of the room, push it. The vent should be exactly that, a vent. Use your fan to create a positive pressure in the room otherwise you will suck dirt in around the doors, under the sill plate etc.. If you opt to use an exhaust fan in the vent the CFM rating should be lower than the "makeup air ...
A dust collector works much like a vacuum in that it generates a powerful suction force that pulls dust into a fan and then deposits the dust in a collection bin. To ensure dust is not released back into the air, the best filters use small micron filters with a large surface area that allow the forced air to be released back into the ...
Consider where you make the most dust and of course how you intend to power the unit. When I placed mine I used my vape and blew smoke into the air where I do the most work. Watching the smoke I found where it …
A prop fan is your worst choice for dust collection. Ok if you just want to blow the air out through the side wall. Air delivery drops rapidly when ductwork is added. Best choice would look like a silo blower with straight blades that won't clog up. As has been said already the motor should not be in the dirty air stream.
Also, by educating yourself about dust collection you will understand why 6" pipe is better than 4" in most situations, you'll learn the difference between "chip collection" and "dust collection", fan curves, CFM and SP, why you should run max diameter from DC to machine instead of reducing, etc., etc., etc. and you will know the potential ...
You can put a Dust Deputy (Oneida) or Duststop (Home Depot) in front of the hose to the shop vac which should catch most of the finer dust. Most floor style dust collection units ( Harbor Freight, Grizzly, Delta, etc) have …
This dust collector has three quiet, supposedly maintenance-free fans with an intake speed of 250 CFM. When combined, that means that the device can achieve a maximum airflow speed of 725 CFM.You'll be able to direct the flow by opening the clear doors and adjusting the airflow speed with the power dial on the case. Overall, it's an exceedingly quiet device, though …

Upgrading to a solid-duct system isn't cheap—adding it to a 600-sq.-ft. shop could cost more than $1,000. And, it might take a few days to put it all together. But when it's done, you'll be putting more dust in the collector and less in your …
So a better option is to get the basement woodshop filled with an air cleaner and to use a dust collection system with all your power tools. These 2 things working in tandem will take care of most of the dust in the air. Another thing you can do to minimise dust is to minimise the use of power tools. Hand tools make much less dust.
Close the gaps and you may find you don't need as many fans.I won't comment about the dust issues around these non-explosion-proof motors. 1 Reply Reply Carl Bullers December 14th, 2018 One way to eliminate the tipping from the …

Even with the best dust collectors, you'll still have to contend with airborne particles. So add an air cleaner capable of filtering all the air in your shop every 10 minutes. To determine how much cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow you need, multiply the length, width, and height of your shop, and divide that total by 10.
The fan is considered a "light duty" exhaust system, so people use it when building an at-home dust vendor. It is used to handle generally clean air. When used on a dust collector, it becomes able to provide a pressure of up to approximately 1 ½" static pressure water gauge.
